Youths Maintaining Culture in the Indian Diaspora

 

SPEAKERS/PERFORMERS:

 

VISHAL SURUJDEO
16 – He has been passionate about music for 7 years and enjoys playing the dholak, harmonium and dhantal, and loves to sing. His dedication to his craft has helped him become a well-rounded musician.

 

SHIVANAND BASDEO
21 – He was a finalist on the Children of Mastana TV show. In 2022, he emerged as the best drummer at the Neeleeji Events Independence Classical Singing Competition in which he played for his father, Ramesh Basdeo.

 

ROHAN SURUJDEO
18 – He enjoys playing the harmonium and dhantal and has a talent for singing. Rohan’s dedication to his musical journey is evident in his consistent practice and humble approach.

 

SAANJALI MAHARAJ
6 – She started dancing in kathak and bharatnatyam styles at the age of 4. Still a music student, she is learning to sing and play the keyboard as well as doing swimming, art and craft.

 

LAURA SEENATH MAHARAJ
39 – As a child, she attended Indian Classical dance classes. She is still a student learning to sing and play the harmonium. Laura has been a Secondary School Biology teacher for 16 years.

 

AARITI RAMPERSAD
17 – Trained in bharatnatyam, folk, film and chutney-style dances, she has been dancing with the Paramjyoti School of Dance for eight years. She feels a profoundly fulfilling connection to Indian culture.

 

ASHRANI RAMPERSAD
15 – She is a student at Parvati Girls’ Hindu College and a Bharatnatyam, Folk, Film and Chutney dancer. She has a passion for dancing because it allows her to express her emotions and feelings.

 

LEENA JAMIE YARNA
24 – Leader and tutor of the Parmajyoti School of Dance. She also sings bhajans with Prayaag Raaj Mandali. Leena holds a BA in Mass Communications and AA in PR & Journalism.
