Writ seeks arrest of Hindu man’s land grabbers

A rights organisation today filed a writ petition seeking the High Court order on the police to arrest the people responsible for forcibly grabbing the land of a Hindu family in Lalmonirhat.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) submitted the petition following a report published in The Daily Star yesterday under the headline ‘Hindu’s land grabbed by AL leader’.

According to the report, Rabiul Islam Miron, president of the Awami League’s Bawra union unit in Lalmonirhat, has occupied a piece of land of a Bhabani Kanta Sen in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.
On February 9, Bhabani and his two sons were picked up by a group of ruling party men and held hostage at the house of another AL leader, Nazrul Islam, in Rasulpur village of Bawra union.

Bhabani and his sons were forced to sign a non-judicial stamp, stating that they were handing over the ownership of a 32-decimal plot of land to Rabiul.
Bidyut, son of Bhabani, said they had to sign the document as Rabiul’s men forced them to do so, the report said.

The HRPB in the petition prayed to the HC to direct the government to ensure security of Hindu people and to protect their rights to property in Patgram area.
It also urged the court to ask the government to form a committee to investigate the reported allegations.
HRPB President Manzill Murshid told The Daily Star that the HC may hear the petition tomorrow.
