WESTPORT, Conn. — A Ridgefield couple, whose journey to Unitarian Universalism (UU) began with their Hindu upbringing, will address an audience at a Westport church this weekend.
Ravi and Sudha Sankar are scheduled to speak at the Unitarian Church on June 28 at 10 a.m. on the topic of “Are you a Hindu UU?”
They will be joined by an ensemble of Carnatic musicians, featuring international vocalist Smt. Shobana Raghavan.
Raghavan, a teacher, composer and performer from New York City, has 20 years of training in Carnatic classical vocal music.
Hinduism and Unitarian Universalism (UU) share deep values and a history dating more than two centuries. Unitarian groups have been active in India since the first church was formed in Madras in 1795.
For the past 30 years, the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Holdeen India Program has worked in solidarity with child laborers, dalits (untouchables), indigenous tribes, women living with poverty, and modern-day slaves as they fight for equity and just social change.
Ideas and practices from Hinduism are welcome in Unitarian Universalism, with worships drawing on poetry, scripture, philosophy and kirtan, or call-and-response chanting.
UU values are shared with Hinduism – most centrally the belief that there is a unity at the core of religious diversity. Like Hinduism, Unitarian Universalism affirms the personal search for spiritual truth, the idea that all things are connected, and a respect for other religious paths.
The church is located at 10 Lyons Plains Road. All are welcome to attend.
