VELLORE: Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) will be introducing yoga in its curriculum beginning this academic year.
VIT vice president G V Selvam disclosed this while addressing around 3,500 students from over 30 schools, 10 colleges, including NCC cadets from 10 battalion and the staff of VIT who participated in a mega event to mark the International Day of Yoga at the VIT campus on Sunday.
Selvam, who earlier led a 33-minute yoga session, said yoga has been practised in India for over 5,000 years. History recounts that Yogi Bodhi Dharma who preached the practice of yoga centuries ago travelled to China to introduce this life-art to people around the world. “Yoga is a tool for better health and living conditions, to promote happiness and peace of mind,” he said.
Thanking PM Modi for having brought Yoga to the centre-stage of the world community, Selvam said schools should include yoga as part of the physical education.
Commanding officer of the NCC battalion col R Sureshkumar, secretary of the DKM college for women D Maninathan, teachers, headmasters and principals of the various schools participated in the event.
