Ujjain: Anniversary celebration of Adi Shankaracharya ends with discourse on Hindu doctrines

Ujjain: Birth anniversary of Hindu philosopher Adi Shankaracharya was celebrated at Kalidas Sanskrit Academy Sankul on Monday evening. He is known for his ‘Advaita Vedanta’ doctrine. Cultural events were organised on the occasion.

The event was attended by esteemed guests, including Swami Parmanand Saraswatiji, energy minister Paras Jain, Mahidpur MLA Bahadur Singh Chouhan, mayor Meena Jonwal and divisional commissioner MB Ojha among others. Parmanand Saraswati threw light on Shankaracharya’s principles and said, “He travelled across India thrice and delivered discourses to enlighten people on ‘Sanatan’ culture. He proposed Vedic philosophy which united people of the country in vulnerable times”.

Dr Satish KS, a professor from Delhi, said that Sankaracharya’s philosophical ideas removed darkness that engulfed the country at that time. Different sects of Hinduism were fighting with each other. Shankaracharya wrote on Vedic scriptures, Brahma-sutra, Upnishads and Bhagwat Geeta. He also explained basic difference between Hinduism and Buddhism in his literature. Urging audience to read Shankaracharya’s literature, he asked organisers to have a reading session too next year.

Government of Madhya Pradesh will soon install a grand metal statue of Adi Shankaracharya in Omkareshwar. Minister Jain said, “A research centre on Sanatan dharma will be set up there”. Ojha also addressed the event and elaborated on philosopher’s teaching.. He also presented mementos to the present guests.

The event concluded with performance by artists from across the country. A rendition of classical music in different ragas on Adi Shankaracharya was presented by Bangalore-based artist Parmeshwar Hegde, who belongs to Gwalior gharana of classical music and has been a disciple of SS Bhatt. He was accompanied by Anil Sathe on tabla and Abhijeet Gotharwal on harmonium. Bharatnatyam artist from Mumbai, Dr Sandhya Purecha and her group presented a dance performance in the event.
