TURTLES A LINK BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH

They are supposed to be a link between heaven and earth and this thus has made them naturally divine .In Asia , the turtle represents universal order and is thought to have created the universe from its body: its shell is symbolic of the heaven while its body is symbolic of the Mother earth and its under shell is said to represent the underworld.

TURTLES AND MYTHOLOGY

Turtles are a popular symbol in mythology because of their longevity and one’s hope and wish for a long life. With their protective shells and charming demeanor, they are often found to be symbols of tranquility. Many cultures depict the turtle as carrying the world on its back or supporting the heavens.

TURTLES ,POSITIVE POINTS AND GOOD LUCK

Many cultures view the turtle as a symbol of good luck representing order, creation, endurance, strength, stability, longevity ( average life span 100 yrs ) fertility ( In Nigeria, it is a symbol of the female sex organs and sexuality)and a gentle innocence.They represent the wisdom of the ancient ones and are highly respected for their strength and individuality.They are said to offer protection,( it has a sturdy shell into which it can retreats for its own protection )good fortune and have the power to bring happiness and good omens.

TURTLES ,NEGATIVE POINTS AND BAD LUCK

A few cultures and religions view the turtle as being bad luck or evil.They are believed by many to have power over all kinds of bad magic.Turtles have also been said to be symbols of immortality and are considered temporary dwelling places for souls that are making their way through a series of lives that are on the path to Nirvana. In the West, early Christians did not like turtles and viewed them as symbolizing evil forces during war. In Greece, turtles were once believed to be the citizens of hell.

TURTLE AS LORD VISHNUS AVTAR AND AMRIT MANTHAN

 

Lord Vishnu’s second avatar was Kurma the Turtle who came to help the Devas obtain the nectar of immortality. To churn the sea into nectar, a giant snake was used as a rope and Mount Mandara was used as a rod. When the mountain began to sink, they called upon Lord Vishnu to help them. He incarnated as a turtle and supported the mountain on his back, so that the nectar of immortality could manifest ( Amrit Manthan ) by the Gods and demons churning the sea

After the churning the Turtle remains in place, and on his back now stand large elephants that support the planet .This is believed by many cultures.
