Security for Hindu victims of Barguna attack demanded

Barguna.12Condemning the recent attack on Hindus at Taltoli upazila of Barguna, a network of 68 non-government organisations yesterday demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.

In a statement, Samajik Protirodh Committee called upon the administration to put in place “special security arrangements” to ensure safety of the minority community in the area.

Ayesha Khanam, president of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad; Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain o Salish Kendra; Salma Ali, executive director of Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers Association; Shaheen Anam, executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation; and Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, country director of The Hunger Project, Bangladesh, are among the representatives of the committee.

Dr Fawzia Moslem signed the statement on the committee’s behalf.

On March 13, at least nine Hindu families of Chandantala village in Taltoli were allegedly forced out of their houses by local grabbers eying 50 acres of the victims’ land. All families were brought back home on Tuesday by police and the local administration.
