OPINION>>>>
January 12, 2015
Dear Friends,
Subject: National Youth Day (January12)-The Birthday Of Swami Vivekananda
We are today on a great day—National Youth Day, celebrated every year as such in commemoration of Swami Vivekananda’s birth day (January 12). In many ways, there could not perhaps have been any better way of remembering this greatman, easily reckoned as the tallest in India, may, perhaps in the world in modern times. In the words of another great son of India, Shri C. Rajagopalachari: ‘Swami Vivekananda saved Hinduism and saved India. But for him, we would have lost our religion and would not have gained our freedom. We therefore, owe everything to Swami Vivekananda.’
We have been put on alert on this today by a young scholar from Jammu, Mahesh Kaul, whom we thank profusely. His paper is longish but we have sought his permission to suitably edit it so as to retain the span of attention, which has necessarily become short these days.
We had two years back the unfortunate experience from a Seminar organised on “The Relevance Of Swami Vivekananda In The 21 Century”, how abysmally low was senior school students’ knowledge and perception of Swamiji or of his thoughts among this group. So, the need for observance of this annual National Youth Day is not only keenly felt but cannot indeed be over-emphasised. We may not perhaps hurt many if we were to say the elders also need to know more on this “warrior prophet” of India, as described by one of his almost unabashed admirers, namely, Bertrand Russell, the philosopher. Tagore’s advice to him was, “If you want to know about India, study Swami Vivekananda.”
The young Mahesh has, therefore, very rightly said that the Swami Ji’s message should be vital for us the youth but also for the entire nation against all evils. Perhaps, we could add, especially in the present-day developing scenario of communal distrust all round.
Some of Mahesh significant assertions are:
· We are witnessing changes not only in political domain but social matrix is also in the cusp of change. In such a dynamic scenario one cannot ignore the discourse the nation is witnessing in terms of nation building with our youth at the forefront. This role was prophesized by the Wandering Monk of India, Swami Vivekananda for the Indian youth to serve the Motherland with full vigor and vitality.
· This year his teaching and ideals have added meaning as the nation is facing numerous challenges in terms of religious debate on conversions .Who else can be the guiding force than Swami Vivekananda to act as the beacon light to dispel the darkness of religious dilemma in terms of conversions from the public domain. Swami Vivekananda is known for various things by various people and all these things in terms of presenting the civilisational continuity of Vedic ideals based on strong society and nation establish him as the torch bearer and sentinel of the Indian nation. He simplified the Vedic ideals of Hinduism and succeeded in presenting the message of universal brotherhood as envisaged by the Vedic seers for the national good. But the most important contribution of Swami Vivekananda was his affront to those indulged in proselytisation in India. Today, when there is oft repeated debate on conversions and “Ghar Wapsi”, his tours of USA and his lectures on the issues related to conversion and missionaries indulged in proselytisation in India is of paramount importance as it will set the things in proper perspective.
· Castigating the missionaries for doing disservice to Christ, he said, “The Christian missionaries, the zeal of the Presbyterian Church and its non-toleration, the dollar-worshipping in this country, and the priests needed overhaul”. He said, “The latter were in the business for the dollars in it and wanted to know how long they would stay in the Church if they had to depend on getting their pay from God.”
· To sum up, the message of Swami Vivekananda is loud and clear to all those who are acting against the spirit of humanity and conversions. He says, “I claim no affiliation with any religious sect, but occupy the position of an observer, and so far as I may, of a teacher to mankind. All religion to me is good. About the higher mysteries of life and existence I can do no more than speculate, as others do.
Well, Friends, many of you know and appreciate there is perhaps no better way now but to tread the path laid down for us, if not for humanity, by this great savant. Without going into any further discussion on him at this stage, we humbly propose let us all read Swamiji’s “Lectures (27) From Colombo To Almora” once or once more. As we are fond of saying, that will make any one, rather every one, a patriot ——-in the language of Swamiji—–“a fierce patriot” that he wanted all of us to be. His advice was always been direct, that is, no prevaricating and no innuendos. He told the youth, “you will reach God earlier through strong biceps then through reading the Holy Gita. A robust body carries a robust mind.”
Should we, friends, on this National Youth Day fail this man, who, as beautifully put by a well-known commentator, had chosen to die young to remain a youth icon for ever? Let us pledge not to.
Vandemataram,
Your sevak,
D.C. Nath
