Massachusetts to Celebrate International Day of Yoga at Four Locations: Boston, Acton, Burlington and Chelmsford

BOSTON—Massachusetts is celebrating the third International Day of Yoga in a big way this year, and at four locations: Acton, Burlington, Chelmsford and the Boston financial district, organizers said in a statement. The United Nations declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga three years ago.“The International Day of Yoga is unique for many reasons,” said Dhanashree Ramachandran, a yoga and meditation instructor in New England. “It is a great opportunity for yoga lovers and enthusiasts in Massachusetts to practice yoga with other yogis under the guidance of experienced instructors from various traditions.”

All events are FREE and open to all, said Ramachandran.

Many local community organizations including the Art of Living, Indian Americans for Burlington, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, International Association for Human Values and Sewa International are coming together in Massachusetts to celebrate the International Day of Yoga at several locations across the state.

Proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the International Day of Yoga is one of a kind resolution to be co-sponsored by 175 countries, including the United States, at the United Nations General Assembly. It is an initiative that brings people from all backgrounds and nationalities together to celebrate peace, health and togetherness.

This year, the theme of the celebration as declared by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations is “Yoga for health.”

Here are details on some of the prominent events scheduled in Massachusetts:

Location: Acton, MA

Date: June 18th

The Yoga Festival at Acton is a holistic celebration of yoga organized by the Art of Living with guided practice of Sri Sri Yoga and meditation.

“The Yoga Festival is a free event but registration is required”, said Lina Shastri, one of the main organizers and Art of Living volunteer. Lina is a marma expert and is passionate about bringing yoga and meditation to everyone. As an Acton resident, Lina is excited to host the IDY celebration in Acton and hopes many yogis in and around Acton will attend the event. Arrive a few minutes early to complete registration and settle down for your practice.

“Indian Americans for Burlington, a community organization founded by Burlington residents of Indian origin to facilitate meaningful contribution to the town is collaborating with the Burlington town to host the International Day of Yoga this year.” said Gini Pookottil, Secretary, IAB. The event is expected to be a unique gathering bringing many yoga traditions together for Burlington residents. This is a FREE event and does not require registration.

Respected community leader and one of the founding members of IAB, Ranjani Saigal was instrumental in making this collaboration possible. The event begins at 8:00 am with Holistic Yoga and Meditation session by Dhanashree Ramachandran, an IAB member and Art of Living instructor. The session is designed to help participants including beginners and veteran practitioners improve focus and overall wellbeing. Feel free bring your kids.

The members of International Day of Yoga, New England organizing committee invite everyone to be a part of the yoga community in New England. The committee has hosted events to celebrate the IDY past two years. Participants benefit from a variety of sessions on yoga and meditation practices. Unique aspect of the celebration is demonstrations by kids and youths along with expert instructors from various traditions. The event is free for all and open to all. No registration required.

The International Day of Yoga @Boston is designed to explore effects of yoga on mental and emotional aspects of health. This is a unique opportunity to connect with practitioners and yogis working in the same areas. From health talks to yoga sessions, IDY@Boston promises to provide an immersive experience crafted to fit the theme “yoga for health”. This is a free event and no registration required.

Several community organizations like the Art of Living, International Association for Human Values, Global Indians For Bharat Vikas and service/ facilities providers like Impact Hub, Boston and Cambridge Innovation Center, Boston are coming together to organize this event.
