Audience members learned about one of the oldest religions in the world at the alpena public library.
Mukesh and Pallawi Verma discussed fundamentals of the Hindu culture and its traditions.
The two, originally from Calcutta, India, moved to Alpena with their son and daughter in 2005. Hindus by birth, they’ve continued to practice the faith.
During their presentation they discussed common misconceptions, and talked about the key concepts of Hinduism including respect, reverence, purity and modesty.
“The main purpose of the religion is to become a very good person in your life and to achieve goodness in your life, and to try to transfer the same values to the next generations,” said Mukesh.
The fundamentals of Hinduism also carry into the families lifestyle through their diet, clothing, celebrations and conduct.
Since moving to Alpena the family tries to visit India every year and a half, but are happy to call Alpena their home.
