Jamaat strike considered for Hindu festival

Chapainawabganj excluded for bathing in the waters of the Ganges

Jamaat-e-Islami has suspended their nationwide Thursday hartal in the district of Chapainawabganj for a religious festival of the Hindu community.

On that day, the Hindu community will be making pilgrimage to the Ganges and bathe in it, a Jamaat statement issued on Tuesday said.

The district of Chapainawabganj will be free from Thursday’s nationwide hartal in light of requests from the Hindu community, the statement read.

The statement was issued by Jamaat-e-Islami acting secretary General Shafiqur Rahman and signed by their Publicity Secretary Mohammad Ibrahim.

However, the hartal will continue in other parts of the country. The party called upon its supporters to enforce the “peaceful” strike throughout the country.

Jamaat’s nationwide hartal, protesting the death sentence of their leader Motiur Rahman Nizami in an arms smuggling case, was deferred earlier for Saraswati pooja.
