Hundreds of Vinayaka idols make their way to sea

Security tightened at various places in the districts

Over 380 Ganesha idols were immersed in Thoothukudi on Sunday as part of the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations. People participated in the procession with gaiety, and with music and dance.

The idols were immersed on behalf of a number of organisations including Hindu Munnani, Hindu Makkal Katchi, Hindu Maha Sabha, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the BJP. Many idols were already immersed over the last few days.

The idols were taken to Sivan Kovil, from where the procession started. It passed through North Car Street, Kasukadai Bazar, First Gate, Mattakadai, Beach Road and finally ended at Threspuram.

Sixty-two idols were immersed on behalf of Hindu Munnani, while around 12 were immersed by Hindu Makkal Katchi.

About 27 idols from Pudukottai and Muthiahpuram were immersed by members of Hindu Munnani at New Harbour Beach.

Nearly 58 idols from Arumuganeri, after a procession via Kayalpattinam, was immersed in the sea near Tiruchendur. About 42 idols at Udangudi, 31 at Sattankulam, around 20 from individuals, were immersed in the sea. Security was tightened at various places in the district.

Tirunelveli

Around 18 idols at Palayamkottai, three at Melapalayam and Tirunelveli junction each, and about 18 idols in the town were taken in a procession and immersed.

The idols from Vannarapettai were immersed in the Tamirabarani, while idols from Uvari were immersed in the sea. Idols from Vickramasingapuram were taken to the river at Papanasam.

Security was beefed up in the district following communal clashes in Shencottai during the Ganesha idol processions. However, no untoward incident was reported in Tirunelveli during the day.

Kanniyakumari

Over 1,000 idols from Kanniyakumari district were immersed at various places in the district on Sunday.

Hundreds of idols were taken in a procession from Nagaraja Thidal, and passed through Vadaseri, Manimedai, Kottar, and was finally immersed in the sea at Sanguthurai.

Similar idol immersions were organised at various other places.

Over 1,500 police personnel were deployed in the district.
