JOHANNESBURG – Hindus around the world are getting together in preparation for one of their biggest festivals, Deepavali or Diwali, also known as the Festival of lights.
“Di” means “the light” and “wali” – means row.
The festival lasts four to five days and is held throughout India and other parts of the world where Hindus reside.
In South Africa devotees celebrate over two days this year, from 22 to 23 October.
Hindus prepare for the major festival by baking, cooking, buying new clothes and holding a prayer before partaking in festivities involving scrumptious feasts, colour and of course lamps and light.
