April 5 will bring the annual Holi, Festival of Colours, celebration to Sarnia.

The Sarnia Hindu Society has arranged a dinner and entertainment at SarniaCollegiate to celebrate the festival, that is thousands of years old.

It celebrates the colours of life and invites people to find the joy and happiness of life as spring arrives, said Kamlesh Patel, president of the Sarnia Hindu Society.

Colours for the festival include bright shades of gulal (pink) and abeer (yellow).

The traditional celebration corresponds with the full moon day in the Hinducalendar month of Phalgun, which is March in the Gregorian calendar.

The gloom of winter is ending and the preparation for the planting of new crops begins.

“We all want the snow to go away,” said Patel.

It is expected 250 to 300 people will attend the event that begins at 5:30 p.m. at SCITS.

A meal of East Indian vegetarian cuisine will be served from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., with entertainment, drama and dance, to follow.

The local society’s membership includes 150 families.

The public is welcome and tickets are available at the door.
