Such acts of violence undermine the very fabric of our democracy and hinder our progress as a nation.
In stark contrast, America is at its best when peaceful debates happen. A prime example is the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas engaged in a series of debates on important issues facing the nation. These debates, conducted with respect and civility, showcased the strength of democratic discourse and set a high standard for political engagement. Democracy thrives on open dialogue, respectful debate, and peaceful resolution of differences. These principles are deeply embedded in Hindu Dharma traditions, which have advocated for deliberation and discussion for thousands of years. This is exemplified by the robust discussions and debates about policies and governance practiced in ancient Indian republics known as Mahajanapadas.
