Hindu outfit opposes Christian convention

250px-LocationChennaiChennai: Hindu Munnani and BJP activists on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration here urging the police not to accord permission to a proposed convention by a Christian group here during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

However, police said the convention organisers have changed the dates so as not to coincide with Ganesh Chathurthi.

The cadres of the Hindu outfits protesting before the suburban Selaiyur Police station claimed that permission for a religious convention by a Christian denomination would not be appropriate during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

A Christian mission had been propagating that a four-day ‘grand religious’ convention would be held at the Railway Grounds in East Tambaram here from August 28, which coincides with Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, they said.

“Is it fair? How come permission for a Christian meet can be given during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations,” Hindu Munnani State General Secretary S Parameswaran told a news agency.

A formal complaint had been lodged, he added.

Asked about this, Deputy Commissioner of Police (St Thomas Mount) P Saravanan said the Christian mission had changed the date of convention to avoid the meet during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
