Goa schools to be roped in for garbage collection

PANAJI: In an effort to take the drive againstgarbage to the school level, the government has provided sets of four-coloured trolley bins to 94 schools and educational institutions in Goa. The four bins are for plastic, paper, metal and glass and for miscellaneous items.

Official sources said that the Goa state pollution control board is receiving calls from various schools requesting for supply of the bins. The government will provide the trolley bins to the remainder of the schools and educational institutions in Goa in the second phase.

The government plans to train school teachers and assistant district educational inspectors (ADEI) in managing garbage in schools and educational institutions so that the movement of eradicating garbage from public places goes down to the level of school children. In fact, the government plans to make ADEIs responsible for their respective talukas in this regard. But this will only be done once the government finalizes contractors for the collection the garbage accumulated in the schools.

Earlier this year, the environment minister Alina Saldanha had initiated a move to galvanize students of 319 schools in Goa to undertake a one-time cleanliness drive of the internal roads in their respective villages and towns.
