Ensure safety of Comilla Hindu families: HC

The High Court today directed the government to ensure safety and security of minority people and their properties in Comilla.

In response to a writ petition, it also ordered the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police in Comilla to submit a report before it after complying with the directive on June 17, Deputy Attorney General Biswojit Roy told The Daily Star.

The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain came up with the order after hearing the petition filed on May 12 by Bangladesh Centre for Human Rights.

The petition stated that thousands of perpetrators have attacked 35 Hindu families at Baksitarampur under Homna upazila in Comilla and vandalised their houses and temple on April 27, creating a rumor that two Hindu boys uploaded defamatory posts in their Facebook pages against Islam the previous day.

The government authorities have not taken any appropriate action against the perpetrators other then filing two cases.

The petitioner prayed to the court to pass necessary orders on the issue.
