Shiva is a major Hindu deity, seen as the ‘destroyer’ or ‘transformer’. Shiva means pure. He is seen as the purifier. He is believed to have drunk all the poison in the world to save living beings in the three worlds. He is deeply venerated by all Hindu traditions, especially so by the Shaivas and the Smartas. He is believed to live on Mount Kailasha, along with his wife Parvati (daughter of the Himalaya) and his sons Kartika and Ganesha.
Shiva is also known as Rudra {The Angry One}, Pashupati {Lord of All Creatures}, Mahesha {Great God}, Nataraja {King of All Performers} and Mahadeva {Great Lord}. Shiva is considered as the Hindu God who has no no birth or death. Shiva has many benevolent as well as fearsome forms. He is often depicted as immersed in deep meditation, with his wife and children or as the cosmic dancer. In fierce aspects, he is often depicted slaying demons.
