Bangladesh Court summons top cop for barring Hindu ritual

downloadThe High Court in its own move yesterday summoned a sub-inspector (SI) of police of Netrakona to it for stopping Nam Sankeertan, a religious programme of the Hindu community to sing incessantly the name of God, at Mohanganj of the district.
SI Borhan Uddin of Mohanganj Police Station has to appear before the HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM  Altaf Hossain on February 24 to explain his role about stopping the religious event, Deputy Attorney General Bishwojit Roy told The Daily Star.
The bench also asked the authorities concerned of the government to take necessary steps so that the Nam Sankeertan at Sree Sree Jagannath Jeo Akra, a place of worship, can be held smoothly.
It issued the suomoto rule upon the authorities to explain in two weeks why stopping Nam Sankeertan by the police should not be declared illegal, he said.
The HC bench came up with the order and rule following a report published on Amader Shomoy yesterday saying that Nam Sankeertan has been stopped on Saturday night at the order of the SI. Advocate Cumar Debul Dey placed the report before the court.
