CHENNAI: The 69th Sankaracharya guru and head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, on Sunday said that the jeevasamadhi of Adi Sankara is situated in Kanchipuram.
This came as a surprise to the devotees gathered at the Sankara Mutt in West Mambalam, who let out an expression of awe, given that Adi Sankara is said to have attained samadhi at Kedarnath, which is located in present day Uttarakhand. Contrary views about the death of Adi Sankara, have been prevailing for ages.
Speaking about the life and times of Adi Sankara at the launch of the spiritual magazine Shree Jagadguru’s first issue in its third year, the Jayendra Saraswathi stated, “One can still find Adi Sankara’s jeevasamadhi in Kanchipuram.”
He also spoke about the journey undertaken by Adi Sankara in the Indian subcontinent and about his continuing legacy.
He advised the devotees over the course of his ten-minute speech on the importance of reading religious books and asked them to read mythological books like Ramayana and Srimad Bhaagavatham. “Do a lot of good work, and tread on the right path. Never tell lies,” he told them.
The event saw the felicitation of writers, editors and all those who have been associated with the magazine since its inception.
Writer Ramagopalan, a former Hindu Munnani leader, who was also associated with RDS, was conferred with the Dharma Veera Chakravarty title, for his contribution to the field of spirituality. Sankara TV, which is aimed at spreading spiritual knowledge to the general public was conferred with Dharma Prachara Samrat title by the seer on the occasion. The 70th Sankaracharya guru Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal was present.
