Wellington Hindu Leader passes away

A popular Hindu community leader passed away in Wellington on Sunday, April 23.

Dr Rajiv Chaturvedi suffered respiratory difficulties and died within a short time as emergency services arrived.

He was the Vice President and National Media & Public Relations Officer for the Hindu Council of New Zealand (HCNZ).

Scientist and Scholar

A research scientist by profession, Dr Chaturvedi loved recreation and outdoor adventures. He contributed immensely to the society as a scholar and community leader. He contributed to all projects of HCNZ, the lead the organisation of regional Hindu conferences in Wellington, accompanied the Hindu Maori delegation to India, organised several Hindu festivals such as Holi and Raksha Bandhan in Wellington.

Earlier this month, he appeared at the Maori Affairs Select Committee Meeting to make HCNZ’s submission on behalf of Hindu community, on the use of waterways for ashes dispersal.

Community involvement

He made a submission to support Secular Education Network’s submission to the High Court regarding religious teaching in New Zealand schools.

Dr Chaturvedi worked closely with many organisations, including Hutt Multicultural Council, the New Zealand Vegetarian Society, the United Nations Association of New Zealand, the Nepalese Society of Wellington, the Wellington Interfaith Council and Hindu Temples.

His death is a sad loss to our community and came as a shock to his friends and colleagues.

We pray for peace for the departed soul and pray for courage and strength to his family, friends and relatives.
