Police have taken eight accused of Nasirnagar Hindu attack case into custody for interrogation following a court order, reports bdnews24.com
Brahmanbarhia Senior Judicial Magistrate Sultan Sohag Uddin granted three-day remand after police sought five-day remand for them on Monday.
Hordes of men ransacked Hindu households and temples in Nasirnagar Upazila of the district on Oct 30 following a Facebook post ‘denigrating Islam.’ More than 150 homes were vandalised besides 15 temples.
Seventy-four people have been nabbed for the mayhem until Monday morning.
Two cases have been filed accusing around 2500 people of being involved in the violence.
The eight were accused in a violence case lodged by Baroari Temple priest Nirmol Chowdhury.
The other case was lodged by Kajol Joyti, a local resident of the area.
The eight accused are ‘Ujjal’. ‘Masum’, ‘Yasin’, ‘Shahid’, ‘Runaid’, ‘Khairul’, Shupto Mia and Baul.
The case’s investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Shadhon Kanti, said: “If interrogated, these eight out of the 74 may yield significant information on those who provoked the attack and directly took part in it.”
Rasraj Das, a fisherman by profession, was arrested and taken on remand on allegation of uploading a Facebook post ‘insulting Islam’. His five-day remand came to end on Monday.
Hindus in Nasirnagar are still in a state of panic although police, RAB and BGB personnel have been deployed in the area.
Raids are on to nab more attackers.
