The auspicious month of Shravana in the Hindu calendar began on Tuesday with devout Hindus thronging temples in the district to pay their obeisance to the presiding deities.

While men take an oath to observe total abstinence from liquor and eating meat throughout the month, women install the idol of Chatti Gowri and offer special prayers every Friday during the month.

The men who wear white cloths throughout the month as a mark of purity also abstain from wearing footwear, as a penance. Special pujas were offered in all temples in the district to mark the beginning of the month. People in the city made a beeline to the famous Sharanabasaveshwar Temple to offer their obeisance.

On Mondays, special pujas are offered in all temples during the month. Special religious discourses have been arranged in the Sharanabasaveshwar Temple during the entire month of the Lunar calendar.
