Hindu Munnani has condemned the Forest Department’s restriction on pilgrimage to Vellingiri hills.
In a release, the organisation’s State president C. Subramaniam said that for long, pilgrims from across the State had been taking a pilgrimage to the hill shrine all through the year. But now the State Forest Department had sought to impose restriction saying that it would not allow pilgrimage for nine months a year. The proposal was an assault on Hindu spirit, culture and people’s belief. The Department had reasoned that aged and ill pilgrims were put to difficulties. It was wrong, Mr. Subramaniam said and added that the Department along with the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department should take steps to provide necessary amenities and support to the pilgrims and not find reasons for restriction. If the Forest Department did not reconsider its decision, the Hindu Munnani would stage a protest, he warned.
