HENB | Hyderabad | Dec 8, 2015:: The City Civil Court on Monday said that no festival should be conducted in Osmania University (OU) till December 21. The court made this order in a petition filed by Sunkari Janardhan Goud, research scholar at Osmania University’s law department, who sought the organisers of the beef festival should be restrained from conducting the festival.
The beef festival was scheduled to be held on December 10 by Democratic Cultural Forum, formed by around 25 students groups of OU.
According to Kotagiri Sreedhar, counsel for petitioner Janardhan Goud, junior civil judge of City Civil Court granted status quo order after the petition was filed on Monday.
“The City Civil Court gave a stay saying no festival should be organised in OU till December 21,” said Janardhan Goud. In his petition, he mentioned that the festival violates provisions of various Acts such as Prevention to Cruelty of Animals Act, 1960, Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act, 1977.
He also stated in the petition that when the beef festival was conducted earlier it led to violence on the campus and many students were injured in the clashes and vehicles were burnt. And that the present situation is worse than the earlier one and there may be serious law and order problems if it is allowed to be held.
Meanwhile police on Monday foiled a run proposed by activists, who plan to hold a beef festival on the Osmania University campus here on December 10. Police, who have already said that no festival would be permitted on the campus in the wake of the university denying permission, shifted the participants of the proposed run, in a van.
Around 30 students of Democratic Cultural Forum, were taken into preventive custody, LT Chandrasekhar, additional DCP, said. Police said that the students were detained under Section 151 of CrPC (arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences), to avoid any kind of untoward incidents, police said. However, no cases were registered against the students.
Police have already said that no festival would be permitted inside the campus in the wake of the university denying permission.
While some groups going ahead with preparations for beef festival on December 10, their rivals were also gearing up to hold a ‘Gau Maata Pujan’ and ‘Pork Festival’ on the same day. However, the police said no group would be allowed to hold any such festivities.
Though the university authorities had earlier refused to allow any festival, the groups said they will go ahead with their plan.
On the other hand to counter the beef festival, right wing Hindu groups led by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had declared that they will conduct worship of cow at the temples on the campus and also take out a rally on the same day.
Some other groups opposing the beef festival had also planed to hold pork festival on the same day. Bharatiya Janata Party’s legislator Raja Singh has threatened that if beef festival was allowed, a Dadri-like situation might occur.
