Dear Friends,

Subject: Ram Temple At Ayodhya

Ever since the demolition of the Babri Masjid, built on a Ram Temple, the building of a Ram Temple at Ayodhya has been a core issue in Indian political scenario that we generally avoid. But at times, one has to transcend sentiments and share facts on the matter.

We have with us a brief report on what Dr, Subramanian Swamy suggests on this matter. His views are :

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has written to party president Amit Shah, outlining a legal framework to approach the issue of the Ram temple at Ayodhya.

After shooting off a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month, Swamy has now written to Shah, seeking for a meeting of the National Executive of the party to discuss the implementation of certain promises made. “I am sure you will agree that Hindutva is the core issue of the BJP’s ideology, and it needs special attention of the Party,” writes Swamy.

In the letter, a copy of which exists with TNM, Swamy writes that along with the letter, he will enclose a copy of his book which contains a legal case for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

And while Swamy says that the matter is pending in the form of an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court judgment, he suggests getting a consent order on the matter based on two arguments in his book.

1.) “A mosque is only a prayer hall which under Islamic law can be shifted when land is needed for a public purpose,” says Swamy. He adds that a bench of judges of the SC took the same view in 1994, and that most Islamic countries which follow the Sharia law including countries like Saudi Arabia have no qualms about the demolishing if for a public purpose like roads etc.

2.) Swamy says that the Narasimha Rao-government via the Solicitor General and on the advice of the SC had filed an affidavit which stated “that if it is found that there was a pre-existing temple before the Babri Masjid was built then Ramjanmabhumi land would be handed over to the Hindus for building a temple. Swamy adds that the Commission of enquiry set up by the Allahabad HC in 2002 had reached the same conclusion.

Swamy writes that on the basis of the above two premises, the party should be able to act on the commitment of building a Ram temple in Ayodhya, one that was “explicitly” mentioned in their manifesto.

“Thus, on these two premises our government should declare that, from January 1, 2016, the construction project, of building a Sri Rama temple in Ayodhya, will commence,” he writes.

Further, Swamy expressed dismay at the fact that Shah had not replied to his earlier letter in March (a fact he also bemoaned in his letter to Modi) which sought a discussion on this issue and other matters, which are “popularly described as Hindutva issue”.

Friends, this is prescription for a political party but with likely huge impact on the socio-political history of India. The government of the day will mull over the timing for the project that the parent party is committed to implement.

We rest our submission here, praying for no big communal fury over this.

Vandemataram,
