Subject: Cultural Vandalism—Civilsation Bulldozed
Frankly speaking, we have been pleasantly surprised by the second editorial in “The Statesman” of March 10, 2015, with the caption, “Civilisation Bulldozed”.
That the media also cares for or indulges in assessment of civilisational loss is something not usually found. They mostly cater for the “nosy” aspect of a piece of news that will instantly hold people’s attention. Be that as it may, the editorial starts: “Ancient history and civilization have been destroyed by the bulldozer and with a ruthlessness reminiscent of the medieval era. From killing people to propagating its mortal variant of Islamist fundamentalism, ISIS is now engaged in what archaeologists and the government in Iraq have condemned as “cultural vandalism”.
So it goes on saying: “It is imperative for world powers to confront this outrage that has the potential to subvert a vigorous faith. Nay more, to destroy a country, its people and culture. Nimrud in Iraq bears witness to the 21st century version of the crisis of civilization.”
The subject then has been put in the context: It bears recall that last July, ISIS had served an ultimatum to the Christians of Mosul to pay a tax, convert to Islam or die by the sword… most fled. Alas, that mortal agenda is now being executed with fanatical fury.
Finally, the editorial concludes: Besides people, it is places and civilization per se that have come under the fundamentalist bulldozer. The hammering of statues, dating to the 8th century BC, is suggestive of a calculated strategy. The richness of that heritage transcends Iraq, however. Historians will record last Thursday’s outrage as an attack on humanity’s collective past. Beyond the attack on the Iraqi people, the country has been subjected to cultural cleansing. The world must react.
Yes, Friends, it is truly that “The world must react”. Despite occasional encouraging reports from here and there, ground indications are yet confusing.
