Those who permit slaying of animals; those who bring animals for slaughter; those who slaughter; those who sell meat; those who purchase meat; those who prepare dishes out of meat; those who serve that meat and those who eat it are all murderers. — Manusmriti

Uses of Panchagavya & the need to protect Gomata Although cow is considered sacred and has a special place in the hearts of many people in India, India has become the second highest exporter of beef. The demand for beef in the country is resulting in the slaughter of more and more cows. Many states have either banned or restricted the slaughter of cow; but the demand for beef among Muslims and other people increased the number of cow slaughters. But it is not a secret about the Congress Party’s support for beef exports as a means of economic development. The Congress government aggressively promoted beef sales abroad.
Buffalo meat has emerged as India’s second highest agri-export commodity after Basmati rice, according to data released by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce. Indian buffalo meat exports touched an all time high of Rs 13,917 crore in value terms in April-October 2013, representing an increase of nearly 58% over same period last year. In terms of quantity too, there has been 23% rise in buffalo meat exports from India. For the fiscal year ending March 2014, the buffalo boneless meat export rose to $4.35 from $3.2 the year before. The export figures are going to go higher as there is no change in the policies of the present government in spite of the campaign promise to stop the export of beef. In spite of the prohibition of cow slaughter as found in the Directive Principles of State Policy contained in Article 48 of the Constitution, the export of the beef has not declines. The Principle reads, “The State shall endeavour to organise agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle.” A number of states have either banned or adopted a restrictive ban on the slaughter of the cows, no mechanism to enforce the Directive. Illegal shipping of cows to cross-country has not been affected. In fact one can assume, the number of cows and buffalos being shipped is increasing based on the local consumption and export figures.
Many illegal slaughterhouses operate in large cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai, Cochin and Mumbai. Kerala has no policy of banning the slaughter of the cows. One can witness the continuous flow of truck packed with cows going to Kerala. Officially, there are approximately 3,600 slaughterhouses operating legally in India, while it is estimated that there more than 30,000 illegal slaughterhouses are in operation. Efforts to close them down have, so far, been largely unsuccessful. In Andhra Pradesh it is estimated that there were 3,100 illegal and 6 licensed slaughterhouses. The elections in 2014 show some glimmering hope for the future protection of cows. The state of Rajasthan has take the first bold step establish a Ministry for Cow Protection. Because of the Constitutional hurdles in creating new ministries it is merged with Endowment department, which is named as the Ministry of Dairy and Devasthan. The Minister, Otaram Devasi, says that his responsibility includes overseeing Rajasthan’s Gau Seva Commission and Cow Conservation Directorate. He says, “I believe if cows have to be saved then every state in India must have separate ministries for cows.” When asked why only cows need to be protected but not other animals, his response was quick and appropriate when he said, “Cows have a spiritual importance unlike other livestock animals. They must be protected at any cost. I would request Modiji to ban cow slaughter and, if need be, introduce strong legislation for that.” We sincerely hope that Rajasthan would serve as a role model for the rest of the country and expect BJP government at the center to adopt this idea to protect the cows to protect us to enjoy the benefits of worshipping the cow and also reaping the benefits of divine blessings of Cow. SPONSOR A COW!
There many concerned citizens that have taken up the idea of protecting the cow by starting Goshala across the country. Many of them sacrificing their lives and depleting their resources to protect the mother cow. Their selfless commitment to protect the cow and preserve Gomata is exemplary. Whatever help we all can render to these selfless souls will honor the pride of Bharata Mata. This is a great opportunity to participate and sponsor a COW so that we can help the Goshalas to acquire more cows and protect them from the hands of these merciless and heartless killers. Once people come to know that the managers of these Goshalas or Sanctuaries will accommodate additional cows, they will take the responsibility of monitoring the illegal flow of lorries carrying cows and would have added courage to stop the trucks and take legal actions to free these cows and handover them over to these Goshalas.
Lord Krishna declares in Bhagavad Gita (10:28), “Dhenunam Asmi Kaamadhuk”meaning among cows I am the wish-fulfilling Cow. Here Lord Krishna is manifest as Kamadhenu, the divine, wish-fulfilling cow. Cow is the only divine living animal that hasSurya Ketu Nadi or Solar Pulse in the hump that has the capacity to receive the rays of the sun. Therefore the cow’s milk, butter and ghee have golden hue. This is because Surya Ketu Nadi, on interaction with solar rays produces golden droplets in her blood that filters into the cow’s milk and cow’s other bodily fluids, which miraculously cures many diseases. Ancient scriptures state “Surya Ketu Nadi” on cow’s back absorbs harmful radiations and cleanses atmosphere. Mere presence of cows is a great contribution to environment.
Many scriptures such as Rig Veda, Atharvana Veda, Charaka Samhita, Rajni Ghuntu, Vridhabhagabhatt, Amritasagar, Bhavaprakash, Sushruta Samhita, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Shatpath Brahman and many Puranas have extolled the virtues of a cow and have placed the cow at the highest pedestal. No wealth that is more superior to the wealth of cows that makes us happy and helps us to lead a comfortable life. Cow is considered the symbol of abundance, wealth, health, happiness, prosperity, good fortune, wish fulfillment and sanctity of life.
Cow is divine. In fact, cow is the abode of all 33 crore Gods. To name a few devatas that occupy various parts of Cow area, they are listed thus: Brahma and Vishnu on the root of two horns; Vedavyasa sits on the tips of the horns, Lord Shankara on the centre head; Parvathi is seated on the edge of head; Karthikeya on the nose; Ashwini Kumaras on the ears; Sun and Moon represent the eyes. Varuna sits on the tongue; Saraswathi merges in the sound of cow; Indra sits on the neck; Dharma on the thigh; Eleven Rudras and Yama on the back; Pitru Devas on the sides of umbilical joint; 12 Adityas on the stomach area; Soma on the tail, Sun rays on the hair; Ganga resides in its urine, Lakshmi and Yamuna appear in the dung, Saraswathi mingled in milk, Narmada in curd, and Agni in ghee; 33 crore Gods in the hair; Fragrant flowers on nostrils; Narayana in intestine; mountains in the bones; and Artha, Dharma, Kama and Moksha in the feet. All Gods reside in various parts of COW making it more sacred, more auspicious, and more divine. It is unfortunate to consider such Cow as commercial object that can be expended without recognizing the value, richness and significance of cow. It is sad to see the plight of cows, neglect of cows, slaughtering of these cows and damaging the ecological balance and human dignity to its lowest levels. It is a sin to equate cows with other animals and treat them inhumanely.
Atharvana Veda aptly describes the nature of cow and its products; “I extract milk of cow and consume the same. I get strength in the body and sweetness in the voice by using the ghee of cow. Our children also take milk and ghee of cow. I am protector of cow. So cows permanently live with me.” Two verses from GAVOPANISHADA capture the essence, significance, nature and importance of cow: Gävo bhütäm ca bhävyaà cagävah pustih sanätanégävo laksmäs tathä mülaàgoñu dattam na naçyati
“The cow is the past and future. She nourishes the health of all living entities, and she is the root of prosperity. The piety one achieves by feeding a cow in never destroyed.”
annaà hy paramam gävodevänäà paramaà haviùsvähakära vañaö käraugoñu nityaà pratiñöhitau
“The cow is the cause of one’s accumulation of food grains. She awards the best sacrificial ingredients to the demigods. The sacrifice of the demigods and the sacrifice of Indra are both performed on the basis of the cow.”
We also find abundance of information about the sacredness and significance inAnusashana Parva in Mahabharata. King Soudasa of Ikshavaku dynasty asks Sage Vasishta, his chief priest was Vasishta, thus: “O Saint! What is sacred in this world?” “O Soudasa! Cow is sacred in the entire world. Cow is the abode for Havis. Cow is the life for all creatures. Lakshmi stays where cows stay. Cow is the ladder to climb to heaven. Human beings shall give away one cow from out of ten cows as Godaana. Saluting cow in morning bestows greater Punya. Cow dung, cow urine are sacred but consuming cow meat is a great sin. Cleaning house with cow dung and consuming cow urine as medicine are advisable.” said Sage Vasishta to King Soudasa. Similarly, Suka Mahamuni asks his father Vyasa, “O father! which is greater than all and which is essential for performing Yajna?” Vyasa responds by telling what Lord Brahma told the assembled saints:
“Cows are sacred. Cows are essential for performing Yajnas. All troubles vanish on the sight of a cow. If cow milk, cow urine and cow dung are taken for three days as medicine, it cures all diseases. Cow ghee gives human being brightness. Chanting Gomati Mantra amidst cows purifies body and mind. Chanting Gomati Mantra in front of Brahmins and Cows accomplishes all desires. Hence Cow is said to be best of all.” Scriptures even talk about the nullifying effect on various negative forces. The place where the cow is tied does not produce any Vastu related ill effects. If there is any malefic effect of any planet, serving the cow with chapatti, jaggery calms down the malefic effect. Cow Tulabharam
To show the respect many farmers perform Tulabharam to sacred cow. In this ritual the quantities of items like pepper, areca nut, coconut, paddy, rice and other items are used par with the weightage of cow. Kapila (red one) cow is given preference since its also referred to as Kamadhenu. The name “Kamadhenu” literally mean the cow “from whom all that is desired is drawn” or “the cow of plenty”. Kapila is a special variety of cow breed as its milk contains more medicinal value and it is considered as spiritual Cow. Panchagavya Benefits
There are five products we receive from Cow: milk, urine, dung, butter and ghee. Each ingredient produces remarkable benefits to the health of all living beings and environment. Panchagavya comes from the Sanskrit “panch” meaning five and “gavya” meaning cow. The main ingredients of Panchagavya are cow dung, cow urine, cow milk, cow curd, and cow ghee. Different recipes are developed by different scientists as well as by farmers themselves. Some people make the Panchagavya by mixing all these five ingredients as well as water of tender coconut, bananas, toddy juice and sugarcane. This mixture is said to reduce the odor. According to research, it is found that Panchagavya stimulates the production of antibodies in animals, thus building the immune system. In humans, it has been reported to increase appetite, heal wounds, and cure number of deceases diseases like Psoriasis and white patches. Urine Benefits Cow is considered the treasure of medicines. The cow urine is capable of curing several curable and incurable diseases. Scriptures such as Atharva Veda, Charaka Samhita, Rajni Ghuntu, Vridhabhagabhatt, Amritasagar, Bhavaprakash, Sushruta Samhita describe the health benefits cow urine. Cow Urine Treatment and Research Center, Indore has conducted a lot of research in the past few years and reached at the conclusion that it is capable of curing diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, heart attack, blockage in arteries, fits, cancer, aids, piles, prostrate, arthritis, migraine, thyroid, ulcer, acidity, constipation, gynecological problems, ear and nose problems, abortion and several other diseases.
Scientific research proved that the consumption Cow urine is associated with the cure of number of diseases, especially cancer. This claim is validated four times over by patents granted by the US and China. On April 8, 2009 granted patent (100475221) while the US patent (7718360) was granted on May 18, 2010. The two patents have certified that the composition is useful for protecting and/or repairing DNA from oxidative damages. DNA oxidation is known to cause cancer. Earlier, two more patents were issued by US for cow urine distillate (Patent numbers 6410059 and 6896907).
“The patents have validated our results,” NEERI’s acting Director Tapan Chakravarti told media persons at a press conference here. “Many patients, some of them terminally ill with diseases like cancer, have come to the Go-vigyan Kendra for treatment and have claimed to have benefited from Gomutra Ark.”
The UK published Mirror has written an article on the benefits of Cow urine. It says that followers of the cult claim cow urine can successful be used to cancer, diabetes, tumors, tuberculosis, stomach problems and much more. They also claim that drinking cow pee is the only solution for treating baldness. (January 1, 2015)
“Only two things are pure in this universe, in this world. One is the water from the Holy Ganges river and the other is urine from mother holy cow,” Ramesh Gupta, a Hindu priest, said.
“Cow urine has been mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures. No one can doubt the good effects it has on the human body. It is a divine gift from God.”
Followers like Gupta, however, insist that urine from every cow cannot be beneficial.
“The cow, whose urine one has to drink, should be a virgin – she must not have delivered a calf. Also, the urine is to be collected just before sunrise – that urine has the best effect,” he said. Cow dung
Dr. K N Uttam, Associate Professor in Physics Department, talked about the nuclear radiation and ways to prevent it. He said some traditional Indian practices could help minimize the effects of Gamma rays, the most harmful rays emitted in nuclear radiation.
“Traditional methods like keeping onions in pockets and applying a layer of Cow Dung on the outside walls of houses absorb the harmful gamma rays,” Uttam said. “Cow dung, in fact, can absorb all the three rays — alpha, beta and gamma. Among these, alpha rays cannot penetrate the layers of cloths whereas beta falls after hitting the same but the Gamma rays penetrate the body tissue and is the most harmful,” he added. If the outer walls of houses are coated with thick layers of cow dung, it will absorb the gamma rays and in turn people would be safe, said Uttam who has worked in the ministry of science and technology and MHRD. Research studies have shown that the Cow dung has a significant anti-radiation property. It is often stated that the Russians have gone to the extent of incorporating a layer of Cow dung (in-between two layers of metal) in the Space shuttles to protect the cosmonauts from the harmful cosmic radiations.
The same property (anti-radiation) of the cow dung has been proved during the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, where the performance of Agnihotra using this Cow dung and Cow ghee was effective enough to completely eliminate the nuclear radiation effect. And the same effect was observed in Bhopal during the chemical catastrophe. Milk Products
Charaka Samhita lists ten qualities of cow milk that help promote good health: Sweetness; cold, soft; unctuous, oily; density, thick; smoothness; slimness, stickiness; heavy; slowness; and calming, clarity. These are also the properties of Ojas (vigor). Since milk has the identical properties, it is expected to promote Ojas among people who consume milk. Milk is considered an elixir. Cow’s milk promotes health, develops brain tissues, and improves intelligence. Of course, in many religious ceremonies and deity worship, people use mainly cow’s milk and it’s products to prepare the sweets and other dishes. The numbers of products that are made from cow milk include yoghurt, butter, ghee and fresh cheese (paneer). COW Ghee:
According to Charaka Samhita, Cow ghee promotes memory, intellect, digestive power, semen, Ojas, Kapha and fat. It also alleviates Vata, Pitta, toxic conditions, insanity, and emaciation. It is considered auspicious and also best among all the unctuous (oily) substances. It increases thousand times in potency and develops manifold utilities.
Similarly Bhavaprakash states, “Ghee is sweet in taste and cooling in energy, rejuvenating, good for the eyes and vision, kindles digestion, bestows lustre and beauty, enhances memory and stamina, increases intellect, promotes longevity, is an aphrodisiac and protects the body from various diseases.” (6.18.1) According to Peter Malakoff and Gilda Zucolella, “Ghee builds the aura, makes all the organs soft, builds up the internal juices of the body-Rasa, which are destroyed by aging and increases the most refined element of digestion-Shukra or Ojas, the underlying basis of all immunity and the “essence of all bodily tissues”. Maya Tiwari calls Ghee the “single most ojas producing food on earth”. Ghee is known to increase intelligence-Dhi, refine the intellect-Buddhi and improve the memory-Smriti.
Although Ghee kindles or increases the digestive fire- Agni, on which all nutrition depends, it does so without aggravating Pitta- the elemental functioning of fire within the body. In fact, Ghee cools the body, essential in much of today’s world in which everything is overheating. Ghee is also prescribed to reduce anxiety, depression, dementia, insanity, epilepsy and other disorders of consciousness. Cow is preferred to light up the lamps in Hindu Temples as well as at homes and also use it when performing the Homa. Light generated by Ghee lamp is more beautiful and brilliant than any other light. This light is also said to ward off negativity and evil influence and promote sattvic attitude. Cow ghee is also widely used in Panchakarma treatment. Ghee is considered the best substance for preparing the body for internal detoxification (Panchakarma) as per Ayurveda. The best remedy for diseases caused by aggravated Pitta and Vata doshas is the use of ghee. It is used internally and externally to detoxify the body and mind. While doing bid massage, apply ghee all over the body, rubbing into head, chest, limbs, shoulders, spine, joints and orifices. The deep massage allows the qualities of Ghee to penetrate directly into the deeper tissues through the pores of the external body. Patients are given certain amount of ghee each morning to purify the internal digestive system.
Purana Ghrita – OLD cow ghee (more than one year old) is useful in intoxication, epilepsy, fainting, emaciation, schizophrenia, insanity, remnant poisons and fever. It is also used relieve pain in the ear, head as well as female genital tract.
It is time to honor, respect and revere our Gomata. Let us not put her to untold misery by sending her to the slaughterhouses through our negligence and indifference. All Hindus need to work together to protect her from being slaughtered, stop the illegal transportation of cows, shut down all the slaughterhouses, emphasize the virtues of divine nature of the cows, advocate the use of cow products for the welfare, health and wealth of the nation. Also work together to stop the export of beef and also stop the subsidy given to the exporters of the beef. Then let us all establish Goshalas or Gomata Sanctuaries so that the cows can be sent to these places and reduce the chances of cows being transported to slaughterhouses. Let us sponsor a cow to make sure that she is housed and fed properly and treat her as a mother that rightfully deserves respect and reverence.
