VELLORE: The Hindu Munnani has announced that it would erect a memorial in Vellore for S Vellaiappan, who was killed on July 1 last year.
The decision was taken by its founding president Rama Gopalan at a public meeting that was organised by the Munnani on Tuesday night, to commemorate the first death anniversary of Vellaiappan.
Addressing a gathering, Rama Gopalan described Vellaiappan as a soft person and a rare personality, who remained friendly with everyone.
Members of the party and the people of the city also expressed their desire to erect a memorial for Vellaiappan and the locals have committed to extend all help in this regard. “I hope to inaugurate this memorial next year,” he added.
Rama Gopalan also appealed to the members of the Hindu Munnani to act as a security cover for the Hindu community. This year more number of idols of Vinayaka must be installed in Vellore and the Vinayaka Chathurthi festival should be celebrated in a grand manner to remember the efforts taken by Vellaiappan, to promote unity and brotherhood among Hindus and other communities, he added. Earlier Rama Gopalan along with other Hindu leaders paid floral tributes to Vellaiappan near Muthumandapam area where he was murdered last year.
Anaikattu MLA Kalaiarasu, managing director of Golden temple M Suresh Babu, state organiser of Hindu Munnani Muruganandam were among the others who attended the event. Later, a procession was held from the location up to the meeting venue near Anna Kalaiarangam.
