Devout Hindus converge at Meenakshi temple in Madurai to witness celestial wedding of deities May 11, 1:18 pm

800px-An_aerial_view_of_Madurai_city_from_atop_of_Meenakshi_Amman_templeMadurai, May 11 (ANI): Thousands of devout Hindus and even tourists thronged the famous Meenakshi temple at Madurai in Tamil Nadu recently to participate in a unique celestial wedding ceremony of Lord Sundareshwar with Goddess Meenakshi, the presiding deities of the temple. Devotees in large numbers gathered to be a part of the elaborate 12-day long ‘Chitirai Peruvizha’ festival performed in the Tamil month of Chithirai. The Madurai Chithirai Wedding festival is one of the biggest celebrations in Madurai. The Celestial Wedding was held on top of a flower decked stage. Roses, jasmine and tulips worth many lakhs were used to adorn the idols. Priests showered flowers on the idols and traditional songs were played to commemorate the celebration.
