Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA): A New Hope for Pak Hindu Migrants

18th August, 2024 will be written as golden day in history of Independent India , when Honorable Union Home Minister Shri Amitbhai Shah himself distributed Indian Citizenship certificates at Ahmedabad to 188 Hindu sharnathis from Pakistan. He emphasized that CAA is not just to grant citizenship to millions of people living in the country, but it is also to provide them justice and their rights. Shri Rajesh Maheshwari President Sindh Minority Migrants Association thanked and felicitated Honorable Union Home Minister Shri Amitbhai Shah and  Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel on behalf of Pak Hindu sharnarthi sangathan. Respected Cabinet Ministers Gujarat, MPs, MLAs from Ahmedabad, DGP and Home Secretary Gujarat and many other officials from different districts of Gujarat were present on this occasion.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) passed by the Indian government is a significant step towards providing Indian citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Under this act, Pak Hindu migrants will be provided citizenship under special provisions. Under the CAA, Hindu migrants will be provided citizenship under the following special provisions:

1. Eligibility for Citizenship: Hindu migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh & Afghanistan who entered India before December 31, 2014, will be eligible for citizenship.
2. Citizenship Process: Migrants will have to apply for citizenship, submitting proof of identity, nationality, and residence in India.

3. Timeframe for Citizenship: The timeframe for providing citizenship to migrants will be 5 years, reduced from the usual 11 years.
4. Rights of Citizenship: Migrants granted citizenship will enjoy the same rights and benefits as Indian citizens.

Benefits of CAA

The CAA will provide the following benefits to Hindu migrants:
1. Security of Citizenship: Migrants will be granted Indian citizenship, ensuring their security and protection.
2. Political Rights: Migrants will enjoy the same political rights as Indian citizens, including the right to vote.
3. Social Security: Migrants will be eligible for social security benefits, such as pension, unemployment allowance, etc.
4. Economic Opportunities: Migrants will have access to economic opportunities in India, including employment, business, etc.

Key Highlights of CAA
The CAA amends the Citizenship Act, 1955, to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The act reduces the residency requirement for citizenship from 11 years to 5 years for these migrants.
