COST OF IMPORTED MILK POWDER DROPPED BUT INMORTERS NOT REDUCING THE PRICE

IMPORTED milk powder for infants is becoming a luxury item due to its high price, according to Penang Hindu Association deputy president P. Murugiah

He said infant milk powder cost him RM28 in 2013, RM31 in 2014 and RM37 in March this year.
“I am now paying RM43 for a 400gm packet.
“Most of the poor cannot afford it and are resorting to feeding their children condensed milk.
“The international price of milk powder has gone down but the price here has increased,” Murugiah said.

He said the Government should bring down the price of milk powder in line with the international market price.

He also suggested the Government to include milk price as a controlled price and should be always monitored so that it can be affordable for the nations to purchase. Mr. Murugiah also said that he has approached FOMCA for some feedback on this issue. He also added that it will be a great move if the Government can come up with a free milk scheme for the one in need.

Currently, milk importers and distributors have invested a huge amount in advertising their items on TV and other medias.

Murugiah, who is the co-ordinator of the Sivasanta Derma Clinic, said the clinic gave out milk powder to the needy on a monthly basis.
He feared that the price would increase further due to the slide of the ringgit against the US dollar.
“I hope NGO’s and all consumer bodies can come up and voice out for the needs of our own nations. We don’t have to fight, but just consider that everyone is able to drink milk. Milk should not be a rich man’s drink but it should be for all.”
