Dear Friends,

Subject: ISIS And Its Impact On World Geopolitical Scenario

By now all of you are seized with the phenomenon known as ISIS/IS, a military outfit of pure Sunni sect of Islam, that has turned out to be a menace to human civilisation.

It started off with the unilateral declaration of the Islamic Caliphate by the ISIS supremo Al Bagdadi in June 2014, by the degree as well as the methodology of perpetrating violence, it has outscored its parental body Al Qaeda and all other sister insurgent groups. It soon took charge of large swaths of land from/between Iraq and Syria, believed to ISIS Hqr. It literally flourished with glamour, attracting youth from European countries, for whom the ISIS occupied a luxury hotel. Its daily expenditure reached 1bn US dollars.

The imbalance it created in geopolitical situation forced the hands of the world power like the US to lead an alliance carrying airstrikes on ISIS occupied territories. Breaking all traditions, even the Sunni Saudi Arabia launched another group for similar airstrikes against the ISIS. Soon, Turkey also joined the US—led alliance.

However, all these could not prevent the ISIS from occasionally be-heading their victims in public view and capturing the scenes on video for publicity or at times indulging in suicidal strikes, especially at mosques on Fridays.

Now, we learn from an editorial in “The Daily Telegraph”, published from Kolkata, of July 31, 2015, that the Syrian dictator (Bashar-ai-Assad) admitted in a public address before a set of distinguished guests that “The situation has forced a change of strategy: the giving up of some areas for the better protection of others”.

He did not mention of the hardship that his “strategy of survival has forced on the people the country he purports to rule.” Many Syrians have tried to move to neighbouring countries, who no longer want to have them. International aid flowing to Syria has long proved to be inadequate to deal with a humanitarian crisis of great magnitude”, for which Assad himself is responsible.

The editorial (attached) concludes:

:”Unfortunately, like his audience at Damascus, powerful nations in the world believe him. To the West, now as convinced as its new-found friend, Iran, he is the last man standing before a Sunni tide engulfs the region.” Therein lies the importance of this strategy.

However, Friends, all this is nothing but, as the editorial has rightly observed, an attempt at, and a strategy for survival against the growing behemoth, the ISIS. So, the title of the editorial, “Some Excuse.”

Vandemataram,

Your sevak,
