Special Lecture, Sri Lanka

The WHEF – Special Lecture “Succeeding in Emerging Markets” by Prof. R. Vaidyanathan evoked an enthusiastic response from a large audience in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Prof. Vaidyanathan spoke about the changing nature of the global economy, wherein emerging (developing) markets have over the last 25 years replaced the G-7 (advanced) economies as the engine of global growth. The West is today facing serious issues like soaring debt & high unemployment, in part due to decline of social institutions like family & over-dependence on the state.
Emerging markets like Bharat, China are more attractive to investors. They offer advantages like high domestic savings rate leading to domestic demand, lower manufacturing base, and labor affordability. However, potential investors need to identify the correct partners with shared cultural mooring, be aware of government regulations, and always plan an exit strategy. Most emerging markets share a Dharmic bond, and that is something which should be leveraged. The networking dinner after the talk offered a great avenue for potential business opportunities to be discussed.
