Dear Mr. Justice (retd) Sachar,

Subject: Mr. Justice (retd) Sachar—Please Think Over

We read with interest your piece on the front page of “The Statesman” of date (January 29), titled, “Legal Action Planned On Information and Broadcasting Ministry” for the advertisement on the original (first) copy of The Constitution of India with pictorial depiction as on the original Constitution by as eminent artist like the great Nandalal Bose, but minus the use of the two currently in-vogue expressions, namely, “secular” and “socialist”, “mischievously” inserted in later point of time.

Well, Mr. Justice (retd) Sachar, you have in your way of thinking felt this was intended to mislead the nation under the influence of the “right-wing” forces, allegedly forcing the government, and went to the extent of calling this an act of treason to the Constitution. May we at this stage draw your attention to a document, doing rounds on the internet, demanding that the original Constitution of the country be brought up in order to know what our Constitution-makers had thought of this sacred document and how it has later been “distorted” purposefully with clear political underpinning and motivation? Well, Sir, is there any harm to bring to the notice of the general public what their ancestors had bequeathed to them? Are you not or have you not thus prejudged the case and passed an experte judgement in this case? Has there been any move by the government to “commit” the crime you have so bluntly conceived. Sir, there has been no casus belli, which we understand is the primary requirement in reaching a judicial decision.

As for the US President’s most uncalled for comments on the religious differences in India, perhaps it will suffice to say that the learned guest visitor had only betrayed his inner thinking, possibly unwittingly or under some unknown pressure or compulsion. The situation in this respect is much worse in his own country. Thus, there is nothing much to lose sleep over it or wallow over it.

Yours sincerely,

D.C. Nath
