Neasden temple helps elderly residents celebrate Sewa Day

imageA little magic, some comedy and a singalong were the order of the day for elderly residents and carers from local care homes in Brent over the weekend.

A special party, organised by BAPS Charities, was held at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Brentfield Road, Neasden, to mark Sewa Day, an international initiative involving “an act of kindness without expectation of reward.”

Cllr Kana Naheerathan, Brent Mayor, joined students from the School of Oriental and African Studies and 25 volunteers from BAPS Charities as guests were guided around the sanctum sanctorum and adjoining cultural complex.

The afternoon incorporated a cultural programme which included a colourful folk dance presented by young girls from the Mandir.

Visitors enjoyed a meal and on leaving were given a personalised souvenir to remind them of the day.

Kirit Wadia, lead volunteer of the event, said: “BAPS Charities is committed to bringing happiness to the lives of other, and the elderly deserve it just as much as any of us. It was really heart warming to see such lovely smiles.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and look forward to more opportunities to bring laughter and joy to more in the future.”
