The Diwali festival: important Hindu celebration comes to Mernda

THE Diwali festival, an important Hindu celebration, is coming to Whittlesea.

The festival will bring its light, colour and families to Mernda’s Buttercross Park on Saturday, October 25.

Mernda and Doreen Multicultural Association president Tom Joseph said the festival was a chance to give the Whittlesea community a better understanding of the culture.

“The city of Whittlesea is really accepting of multiculturalism,” Mr Joseph said.

“It’s an opportunity to see all the dancing, food, culture that we are proud of and to get to know Indian culture much better.

“For some people, this will be their first experience of Diwali, the traditional Indian festival of lights.”

Visitors will enjoy Asian street food, a mass yoga class and entertainment by the Umendra Dancers,Rhythm Speaks (pictured), HRD Cosmix, Federation of Bangra, Skanda Matha School of Dance andMelbourne Tabla School.

The free festival will run from 11am-5pm.
