About Us

Indian Folk Music Academy is a pioneer in Mauritius dedicated towards safeguarding the folk cultural heritage from India through education and training of people of all age groups, particularly the youth.

The Academy seeks to enrich the current as well as the future generation about the rich heritage of folk music, customs and traditions brought along by our ancestors from India.

For achieving its objective of carrying out research in Indian folk music and dance, training the youth, promoting the traditions bequeathed from our elders, the Academy is constructing its Headquarters with a wide range of facilities.

Promote Indian folk music and dance by carrying out research work, training youths and organizing exchange programmes in the diaspora.

    ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ACADEMY

  1. Giving performances and musical Ramayana chanting throughout Mauritius during the past 10 years
  2. Touring UK in 2005 and 2013 with some 15 artists
  3. Touring Durban, South Africa in 2008
  4. Winning national level Ramayan chanting competition on two occasions
  5. Producing 2 audio CDs the Shree Ram Ras on verses of the holy Ramayana sung musically
  6. Running folk music classes for children for the past four years
  7. Purchase of a plot of land of 60 perches at Chitrakoot
  8. Embarking on the construction of its headquarters for better promoting Indian folk music and dance
    3Construction of Basement Level of the buildingCONSTRUCTION OF ACADEMY HEADQUARTERS AND FACILITIES COMING UPThe structure which is under construction consists of a basement, a mezzanine, and first floor.

The building will offer an integrated service to the community as follow:

  3. Exhibition of old and new musical instruments , pictures showing programmes organized by our ancestors
  4. Toilets/ bathrooms

  7. Large catering area

  3. Yoga Centre/ Fitness Centre
  4. Ayurvedic medicine distribution centre/ ayurvedic massage center
  5. Recording studio
  6. Guest rooms with attached facilities

Social Hall with capacity of 400 seats

 

UNIQUE FACILITIES WITH GUEST ROOMS

The Guest rooms will offer possibilities for residential training programmes for youths.

 

Also it will provide accommodation for guests from the diaspora visiting Mauritius.

 

Mauritian families will benefit from retreats topped up with music and dance, entertainment and leisure, delicious Indian recipes, Ayurvedic medicine and massage, and a green and luxurious environment at the foot of the Mountain Range.
