BHOPAL: Members of Bajrang Dal laid siege to a police station in the heart of Bhopal on Friday after a minor dalit girl was allegedly abducted by a man from a minority community two days ago.
Calling it ‘love jihad’, over 100 right-wing activists gheraoed the MP Nagar police station and gave a 48-hour ultimatum to police to track the girl. Bajrang Dal members threatened to bring the city to a halt and lock down all police stations in the state capital if the girl was not rescued.
Police said they had lodged a case of abduction and are trying to locate the girl. The 17-year-old girl is missing since September 10 and family members claimed she had been abducted by a neighbour, Amir, 23. Both are residents of Rajeev Nagar.
The girl is a school dropout and her father runs a shop outside their home. The accused, Amir, is a painter by profession and is married. Police said Amir left his mobile at home and is using another phone, which they are trying to track through surveillance. A police party has also left for Katni where his in-laws live.
Bajrang Dal leaders said the girl’s parents had approached them after police refused to act.
Bajrang Dal state coordinator Kamlesh Thakur said, “Massive protests would be held if police failed to rescue the minor within their deadline. When we went to the police station in the morning, officials did not allow us to enter. This exposes the police insensitivity,” he said.
