RANCHI: The passport of Raqibul Hasan Khan, who allegedly deceived national-level shooter Tara Shahdeo into marriage and later tortured her for over a month for conversion to Islam, was impounded on Monday after Ranchi police moved a request to the regional passport office here, said regional passport officer Sanatan.Police also raided his flat in upscale Blair Apartment in Ranchi on Monday and found documents of land deals.

Shooter Tara Shahdeo, in her complaint, has named many important persons from politics, judiciary and administration with whom Khan had contact. But senior investigating officers did not divulge names.

Khan, who, police said, who was unemployed, lived a luxurious life in a plush apartment and moved around in SUVs. He ran a nondescript NGO, Kaushal Bio-tech India Pvt Limited, in the city.

“Khan’s source of income is not very clear. He lived in one of the costliest apartments in te city where several VIPs also lived. Police are investigating this,” SSP Prabhat Kumar said.

A member of the investigating team that raided Khan’s apartment on Monday, told the TOI on condition of anonymity that the home decor looked expensive.

One of Khan’s neighbours, who did not want to be identified, said he always parked three to four cars even though one flat owner is allowed to park only one. “No one opposed him because we felt he was some powerful man,” he said.

Police said they have enough evidence to believe that Khan made illegal deals. “In 2008-09, he and his mother were like us and lived in Bariyatu Housing colony. They supplied food to lodges in Bariyatu. We are still wondering how he became so rich and so soon,” said Khan’s neighbour in Bariyatu.

All in Khan’s earlier neighbourhood were, in fact, taken aback when Khan invited them to his wedding party at a five-star hotel in Ranchi this May.

Ranchi SSP said during investigation police found out Khan’s father was Hindu and his second wife a Muslim.

“After the death of his father he (Khan) converted to Islam. His mother had not converted to Hinduism even though she had married his father (a Hindu),” Kumar told TOI. Khan’s father died in 2008.

Ranchi witnessed a violent protest on Monday with young protesters on two-wheelers attacking cars and small trucks and shopowners who tried to do business. In Lalpur, a group of them tried to smash the glass walls of a hotel which did not break. In Purulia Road they released dozens of chicken from a net kept at a chicken shop.
