NEW DELHI: After the World Economic Forum, it’s now the turn of the World Hindu Economic Forum (WHEF), a group of economists, which released its reform manifesto for the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday, calling for trimming the previous government’s massive social welfare schemes.
Addressing a press conference, WHEF suggested that the government should undertake disinvestment in public sector companies with renewed vigour, disband the Agriculture Produce Market Committee Act, curtail programmes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and expedite the overall decision-making process to step up infrastructure investment.
The manifesto, which will be submitted to Modi in a few days, has been put together by economists such as Bibek Debroy, former director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, ex-London School of Economics professor Gautam Sen and R Vaidyanathan of IIM, Bangalore. While working as director of RGICS, Debroy had praised Modi government for development in Gujarat.
