VHPA congratulates the people of India
The World Hindu Council of America (VHPA), congratulates the people of India, for successfully electing a new government in the most elaborate exercise of democratic process, anywhere in the world. As the geographical and spiritual homeland of the largest number of Hindus worldwide, India is often considered as the Punnyabhumi for the community.
In the past one month more than 1.25 billion people participated in a complex election process that included issues relevant to the survival of the Indian economy and socio-political identity. The ruling coalition which had dominated the political discourse for most of the past six decades was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Narendra Modi. This paradigm shift in the Indian political discourse, to a identity rooted in the concept of “Hindu Universalism”, is in stark contrast to the divisive and appeasement politics that had mired the country over the past few decades.
The decisive mandate offers the new government an opportunity to tackle some of the intractable problems plaguing India, such as- the situation of the Hindu refugees from Kashmir, uniform civil code for all citizens of India, and the perpetual threat of terror. It also allows the government the ability to have and a more global outlook in preserving and promoting the values of Hindu Dharma.
The World Hindu Council of America (VHPA) wishes the new government led by Narendra Modi, all possible support in fulfilling their mandate. We believe people of India have entrusted BJP with the task of bringing about social equity and economic growth, for all. We are confident that a better understanding and partnership will develop between India and the United States that is rooted in mutual respect, shared threat perception and a move towards increased prosperity for all.
