Mamata threatens voters with consequences for supporting BJPAccording to a letter to the Election Commission, BJP has complained that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee has gone about threatening voters in Matigara, Naxalbari, Siliguri, Phansidewa and Chopra Assembly segments which fall under the Darjeeling Parliamentary Constituency. The statement issued by the national convener of the party’s election cell R Ramakrishnan says that she had challenged Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha while stating that she will settle scores with the Morcha, once the election is over.

In a direct attack on Marwaris and other Hindi-speaking communities, the Chief Minister said, “I request the businessmen not to vote for the BJP. BJP has an agenda to divide the State. If they are voted to power, serious law & order problems may arise, thus hampering your business.”

BJP felt that these direct threats were a result of the large turnouts at Narendra Modi’s rally in Darjeeling. While the party cited media reports as evidence of such statements from Mamata Bannerjee, it had urged the Election Commission to declare the four Assembly segments sensitive and security stepped up to ensure free and fair polling in the areas.
