Upset Hindus are urging Amazon.com, the world’s largest online retailer, to immediately remove pants carrying images of Lord Ganesha on the company’s website, calling the images inappropriate.Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, said that Lord Ganesha is highly revered in Hinduism and is meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be worn around one’s legs, crotch and hips. Inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts for commercial purposes should not be tolerated, he stated December 27.
He also asked Amazon.com to issue a formal apology.
Zed further said that such trivialization of Lord Ganesha is disturbing to Hindus around the world.
Pants which Hindu devotees are finding objectionable include Ganesha’s Dream Hot Pant ($65.95-$69.95)” and Ganesha’s Dream Bell Bottoms ($74.95-$78.95).
In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the god of wisdom and a remover of obstacles and is invoked before the beginning of any major undertaking.
